Rolls-Royce, a British aero-engine manufacturer, has announced that it has begun work on blades for a demonstration prototype of its new UltraFan engine. The blade, which has a diameter of 3.56m, is made of hundreds of layers of carbon fibre and high performance toughening resin at high temperatures and pressures, while the leading edge will still be made of titanium alloy. UltraFan engines will reduce fuel consumption by 25 percent compared to Trent engines and will also reduce emissions by 25 percent.
